Blizzard Entertainment has officially announced the return of 6v6 to Overwatch with a new event called Overwatch Classic. This event goes beyond simply reinstating the old format removed in Overwatch 2 and aims to recreate the original Overwatch 1.0 experience. Before Ana and Sombra, distinct tank and defense roles, and additional game modes, Overwatch dominated the hero shooter genre. Over the years, developers adjusted hero abilities and implemented changes to maintain balance and prevent overpowered meta compositions.
Two significant shifts marked the series’ evolution. First, the role queue system ensured a balanced team composition (two damage, two tanks, two support). Second, Overwatch 2 transitioned from 6v6 to 5v5 gameplay.
Overwatch Classic, a series of limited-time events, allows players to relive past iterations of the game. According to a Blizzard blog post, these events will feature hero rosters and balance states from significant moments, like the fast-paced Moth Meta of 2017 and the triple-tank, triple-support Goats meta.

The initial event, running from November 12 to December 2, features the original maps, first four game modes, and the starting 21 heroes with their initial kits. This means the return of overpowered Widowmaker and the less-refined Symmetra in her support role. Adding to the nostalgia, the “No Hero Limits” rule is active during the first few days, allowing for compositions like five Genjis.
The most significant change is reverting to 6v6 combat. While initially confident in the 5v5 shift for Overwatch 2, Blizzard recognized it didn’t solve all issues, impacting match variety and tank character balance. The blog post clarifies that Overwatch Classic is separate from ongoing 6v6 development plans, with further testing and feedback collection planned.
The return to 6v6 in Overwatch Classic marks a significant step for Blizzard, offering a nostalgic trip while gathering valuable data for future development. This limited-time event provides a unique opportunity to experience the game’s origins and appreciate the evolution of Overwatch.
