PS5 URL Sharing Leads to PSN Bans

PS5 URL Sharing Leads to PSN Bans PS5 URL Sharing Leads to PSN Bans

PlayStation 5 and PS5 Pro users are facing potential PlayStation Network (PSN) bans for sharing links, including Google URLs, via PSN messages. While technically against the Code of Conduct since the PS5’s launch, this rule is now being more strictly enforced, leading to increased moderation and bans. This has prompted warnings on platforms like Reddit, urging users to be cautious.

A recent Reddit post highlighted the issue, detailing how a user received multiple emails from PlayStation for sharing different Google.com URLs, flagging them as “malicious URLs” that could “harm another player.” The user stated this practice of sharing standard URLs had never been an issue before. They speculated that the increased enforcement is due to either an error in the automated moderation system or a deliberate tightening of restrictions.

This increased moderation, likely driven by AI and automated systems, is raising concerns among users. Many comments on the Reddit post echoed the sentiment that the enforcement seemed excessive, especially given that URLs are often automatically filtered before reaching the recipient. One user pointed out the irony of receiving a warning for sending a link to their own alternate account, which was instantly flagged and removed.

Both PlayStation and Xbox have intensified moderation efforts during the current console generation. This has resulted in a surge of bans for activities previously tolerated, leading to frustration among players. The rationale behind this heightened scrutiny includes concerns about jailbreaking and user safety.

Xbox employs a similar link filtering system on Xbox Series S and X consoles. While these measures aim to enhance security, they are also impacting regular users who have never encountered problems sharing links before. As of yet, there has been no official statement from PlayStation regarding this increased enforcement. However, the noticeable change in moderation practices has left many PS5 users apprehensive.
