Microsoft’s highly anticipated Copilot+ PCs, featuring the AI-powered “Recall” photographic memory function, were set to launch in just days. However, Microsoft has announced a delay for this key feature. While this postponement might seem like a setback, it’s a crucial and ultimately beneficial move for both Microsoft and consumers.
The “Recall” feature, designed to offer users a personalized AI assistant capable of searching images and retrieving messages, has been at the center of controversy since its unveiling. Concerns regarding privacy and security vulnerabilities led some to label it a PR nightmare. This delay allows Microsoft to address these critical issues before a widespread release.

Copilot+ boasts several AI-driven features, many of which are already available in Windows or via cloud services. “Recall” was intended to be the differentiating factor, providing a truly personal AI experience. However, security researchers quickly uncovered vulnerabilities, raising concerns about data breaches. One researcher even claimed that “Recall’s” recorded data could be compromised with just two lines of code. These security flaws, along with growing privacy concerns, forced Microsoft to shift “Recall” from an opt-out to an opt-in feature.

The initial announcement of Copilot+ and “Recall” significantly impacted the PC industry. AMD expedited the release of its Ryzen AI 300 processors, and Intel intensified development on its Lunar Lake CPUs. Ironically, these chip manufacturers, despite their efforts, won’t have access to the software upon their release. Microsoft is initially limiting Copilot+ to devices equipped with the Snapdragon X Elite chip, despite early indications of performance issues. This delay levels the playing field for all three chip vendors, allowing for more balanced competition.
Currently, “Recall” will be available in preview form for Windows Insiders with Copilot+ PCs. Microsoft states it intends to make “Recall” available for all Copilot+ PCs soon. However, the reality is far removed from the initial vision. The feature is now restricted to a select group of devices and further limited to those participating in the Windows Insider program. Even within this limited rollout, “Recall” remains in “preview” status.
Microsoft’s decision to delay “Recall,” while seemingly a retreat, is a necessary step. The identified security and privacy concerns require thorough attention before a broader release. While the delay might disappoint some, it demonstrates Microsoft’s commitment to delivering a secure and reliable AI experience. This proactive approach ultimately benefits users and strengthens trust in the Copilot+ platform.
