It’s important to note that the production version hasn’t been officially revealed, and even the final name remains under wraps. The I.D. Buzz concept provides a strong preview, but expect some changes to the design and specifications. This is typical during the transition from concept to production. However, Volkswagen has confirmed the retro-inspired design and the use of the versatile MEB platform.
The Buzz echoes its predecessors with a two-tone paint scheme, tall quarter windows integrated into the front doors, and distinctive rear roof pillar vents. While it lacks the original’s split windshield and round headlights, the concept’s retro cues clearly link it to the iconic 1950s Microbus, produced until 2013 in Brazil.

The Buzz’s spacious cabin, as showcased in the concept, accommodates up to eight passengers across three rows. Floor rails enable flexible seating configurations, and the front seats can swivel 180 degrees, creating a lounge-like atmosphere. Expect a range of adventure-ready accessories, like camping tents, further enhancing the Buzz’s versatility.

Cargo Capabilities of the Electric Microbus

Following in the footsteps of its ancestor, the Buzz will offer both passenger and cargo configurations. The cargo variant, also previewed as a near-production concept, features a cavernous storage area with a flat loading floor and a 230-volt outlet powered by the battery pack. This transforms the Buzz Cargo into a mobile workshop, boasting a 1,760-pound payload capacity.
Powertrain and Performance: From “Eventually” to Electric

While the original Microbus was known for its leisurely acceleration, the electric Buzz promises a significant performance boost. The standard MEB platform uses a single rear-mounted motor. However, the Buzz utilizes two motors (one per axle) powered by a substantial 111kWh battery, generating 369 horsepower. This setup delivers an estimated 270-mile range and a 0-60 mph time of five seconds, with a top speed electronically limited to 99 mph. A less powerful, single-motor version with an 83kWh battery and 268 horsepower is also possible. Notably, there are no plans for a gasoline-powered model.
Autonomous Driving Potential

Volkswagen is developing the Buzz with autonomous driving capabilities in mind. A partnership with Qatar will see a fleet of autonomous prototypes deployed during the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Doha. This collaboration focuses on developing the necessary infrastructure for autonomous vehicles. These prototypes will feature Volkswagen’s Level 4 autonomous driving system, allowing hands-free and eyes-off operation under specific conditions. While the availability of this technology in the production Buzz is uncertain, it highlights Volkswagen’s commitment to autonomous driving.
Release and Availability

Volkswagen launched the MEB platform with the ID.3 hatchback, followed by the ID.4 crossover. These higher-volume models take precedence over the Buzz. The anticipated debut of the electric Microbus is scheduled for 2022, with production commencing shortly thereafter. While the exact timing remains fluid, the revival of this iconic van is definitely on the horizon.
