Despite Call of Duty: Black Ops 6 achieving a monumental launch, becoming one of the largest in the franchise’s history, two prominent role-playing games (RPGs) are proving formidable competitors.
Dragon Age: The Veilguard, the highly anticipated latest installment in BioWare’s acclaimed RPG series and the first Dragon Age title in over a decade, has outperformed Black Ops 6 in sales on Steam just a day after its release. Steam’s top sellers list positions The Veilguard slightly ahead of Black Ops 6‘s single-player campaign, followed by the MMO Throne and Liberty and Monster Hunter Wilds open beta, which launched on Friday.

SteamDB has consistently ranked The Veilguard as the top-selling game globally on Steam since its release on October 31st. The game reached a peak of 170,623 concurrent players and currently maintains approximately 59,000 concurrent players, the highest on Steam at the time of writing. This marks the highest player count for a Dragon Age game on Steam, although it’s important to consider that EA games were not available on Steam during the release of the previous title, Inquisition. Inquisition reached a peak of approximately 73,000 players in 2020.
While The Veilguard enjoys significant success, another recently launched RPG presents even stiffer competition: Monster Hunter Wilds‘ open beta. Currently the top wish-listed game on Steam, it boasts nearly 363,000 concurrent players, peaking at an impressive 464,000 players. This clearly indicates immense anticipation for the full release scheduled for February 28, 2025, further fueled by the free access offered by the open beta.
While the RPGs are making waves, Call of Duty‘s multiplayer maintains a strong presence on Steam. Reaching a peak of 220,759 players and currently holding around 192,000 concurrent players, it remains a popular choice for gamers.
Black Ops 6 reportedly shines on console platforms. Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella announced it as the “biggest Call of Duty release ever,” achieving record-breaking day-one player numbers and Game Pass subscriber additions. However, Activision and Microsoft have not disclosed specific figures. Analysts suggest the game is likely also performing well on PlayStation 5.
Regardless of player preferences, PC gamers are presented with a wealth of options entering November.
