The Cadillac Escalade, a symbol of traditional SUVs, returns for 2021 with a bold infusion of cutting-edge technology. While the world buzzes about electric vehicles, the Escalade retains its classic truck-based construction, substantial body, and robust gasoline engine. However, beneath the familiar exterior lies a tech-laden interior designed to compete with the most innovative vehicles on the market. This includes a groundbreaking 38-inch OLED screen and a sophisticated Super Cruise driver-assist system with automatic lane change capability.

A 38-Inch OLED Display Takes Center Stage
Matching its imposing size, the 2021 Escalade boasts a massive 38-inch infotainment screen, the first automotive application of OLED technology. Upon its summer 2020 release, it was the largest display in any production vehicle. This impressive screen is comprised of three separate displays: a 14.2-inch digital instrument cluster, a 7.2-inch driver control screen to the left, and a 16.9-inch central display to the right.
Joanne Leddy, Escalade’s Infotainment Program Manager, explained to MaagX that the thin and flexible nature of OLED screens allowed for this innovative design. Rather than simply placing a large screen on the dashboard, Cadillac opted for a more integrated and stylish approach, curving and shaping the display to complement the interior styling.

OLED technology also enhances the display quality, offering deeper blacks and more vivid colors compared to traditional LCD screens. This required adapting the technology to meet automotive standards, including developing a special film to minimize reflections across the Escalade’s windows. The instrument cluster displays conventional gauges, optional night vision, navigation, and an “augmented reality” navigation view overlaying directional arrows on a forward-facing camera feed. The 16.9-inch infotainment display toggles between touch-based icons and a controller-operated carousel view, adapting to user preference with a proximity sensor.
Rear Seat Entertainment Reimagined
Recognizing the importance of rear seat entertainment, the 2021 Escalade offers an optional dual-screen system. Two 12.6-inch touchscreens are mounted on the front seatbacks, each with individual USB and HDMI inputs for personalized media consumption. Passengers can share content between screens with a simple swipe. Front-seat control and navigation integration further enhance the rear passenger experience.
Advanced Driver-Assist with Super Cruise
The Escalade features the latest iteration of Cadillac’s Super Cruise driver-assist system. Beyond acceleration, steering, and braking on designated highways, this system now facilitates automated lane changes with a simple turn signal tap. Utilizing radar, cameras, and GM’s advanced electrical architecture, Super Cruise analyzes road conditions and executes safe lane changes. While the system operates on pre-mapped roads, enhanced data processing allows for improved performance. Super Cruise functions in various weather conditions, alerting the driver when conditions impede lane marking detection. A driver-facing camera monitors attentiveness to ensure driver readiness.

Classic Chassis and Powertrain Options
Beneath the advanced technology, the Escalade retains its body-on-frame construction, shared with the Chevrolet Tahoe/Suburban, GMC Yukon/Yukon XL, and Chevrolet Silverado/GMC Sierra trucks. This design prioritizes towing capacity, while a magnetic suspension system enhances ride smoothness. A new 3.0-liter Duramax turbocharged inline-six diesel engine option joins the traditional 6.2-liter V8, offering 277 horsepower and 460 lb-ft of torque. Both engines are paired with a 10-speed automatic transmission, with the V8 expected to be the popular choice.
Competitive Landscape and Pricing
While competitors like the Lincoln Navigator, Land Rover Range Rover, BMW X7, and Mercedes-Benz GLS offer distinct advantages in power, off-road capability, and handling, the Escalade’s OLED infotainment system and Super Cruise remain unmatched. Pricing is expected to align with competitors, potentially reaching six figures for fully-loaded models. The OLED screen is standard, while Super Cruise, night vision, and rear seat entertainment are optional.
