General Motors (GM) is recalling 7,606 2025 Chevrolet Equinox EVs because their pedestrian alert sounds may not meet U.S. and Canadian safety standards. This recall addresses a potential safety concern where pedestrians might not hear the approaching EVs, especially at low speeds.
Pedestrian Safety Concerns Prompt Recall
The recall stems from the Equinox EV’s quiet electric motor. Unlike gasoline-powered cars with their rumbling engines, EVs operate much more silently, posing a risk to pedestrians who rely on sound to detect approaching vehicles. This has led to regulations mandating artificial sounds for EVs at low speeds. In the U.S., this applies to speeds up to 18.6 mph.
Non-Compliant Sound Levels
GM has identified that the affected Equinox EVs emit sounds below the federally mandated minimum. This can create dangerous situations where pedestrians cannot accurately gauge the vehicle’s speed, increasing the risk of accidents. GM states, “Under some conditions, pedestrians may not be able to determine by sound whether an approaching vehicle is speeding up or slowing down, increasing the risk of injury.”
Software Update to Resolve the Issue
GM plans to notify owners of recalled vehicles starting January 2025. The fix involves a software calibration update to adjust the pedestrian alert sound levels to comply with regulations. This software update will be implemented at no cost to the owners.
Impact on Equinox Sales
The recall affects a portion of the more than 15,000 Equinox models sold in the third quarter of 2024. The Equinox LT, launched in October and touted as the “most affordable EV in the U.S.” with a pre-tax-credit price of $35,000, is part of GM’s push towards electric vehicle adoption.
