BYD, a leading Chinese automaker, has partnered with drone giant DJI to introduce Lingyuan, a roof-mounted drone station for BYD vehicles. This innovative system allows for autonomous drone take-off, landing, and real-time filming, all controlled through the car’s touchscreen display. The display also shows the drone’s live video feed.
The Lingyuan system integrates seamlessly with BYD cars, providing a convenient and integrated drone solution. Drivers can launch and land the drone autonomously, monitor its flight path, and view live footage, all without leaving the driver’s seat. This integration opens up new possibilities for capturing unique perspectives and enhancing the driving experience.
However, there are speed limitations for drone operation. Driving faster than 33 mph (54 kph) is not recommended for filming, as the drone may struggle to maintain stability. Additionally, deploying or landing the drone requires slowing down to 15 mph (25 kph) to ensure a safe and successful maneuver.
First announced in 2023, the roof-mounted drone system is now available for all BYD models. The package includes a retractable landing pad, charging station, video editing software, and a DJI drone, likely the Air 3S quadcopter based on the promotional video. This comprehensive package provides everything needed to capture and edit aerial footage on the go.
Currently exclusive to China, the Lingyuan system is priced at approximately $2,200 (16,000 Chinese yuan). There is no information yet on international availability. This innovative feature could attract tech-savvy drivers and drone enthusiasts looking for a unique and integrated aerial photography solution.
