The US Transportation Secretary, Pete Buttigieg, has issued a warning against wearing Apple’s Vision Pro mixed-reality headset while driving. This seemingly obvious caution comes after a video circulated online showing a person wearing the headset while seemingly operating a Tesla Cybertruck.

While the Vision Pro offers a compelling mixed-reality experience, it’s not designed for use while operating a vehicle. Apple markets the device as a “spatial computer” intended for productivity, entertainment, and potentially replacing your Mac—not for enhancing or augmenting driving. The device is not a heads-up display and lacks features designed for automotive integration.

The video that sparked Buttigieg’s warning showed the driver with hands off the wheel, presumably relying on Autopilot, while interacting with the Vision Pro through hand gestures. This raised concerns about driver distraction and safety. Buttigieg reiterated on X (formerly Twitter) that all advanced driver-assistance systems still require the driver to remain in control and fully engaged in driving.

Apple’s website addresses safety guidelines for using the Vision Pro, emphasizing built-in features to prevent collisions and falls. However, these precautions are designed for navigating indoor environments, not preventing traffic accidents. The company hasn’t explicitly warned against using the headset while driving, likely assuming it was self-evident. This incident may prompt a more direct caution on their website.

Apple’s marketing materials and demonstrations have focused on showcasing the Vision Pro in home and airplane settings (for passengers, not pilots). In-store demonstrations feature a simulated living room environment, not a vehicle interior, further underscoring the intended use case.

Time will tell if Vision Pro users heed this warning, but it seems likely that incidents involving the headset and driving may eventually occur.
