Ford’s adoption of Tesla’s North American Charging Standard (NACS) is now a reality for EV owners. Last year, Ford announced its intention to integrate NACS, allowing its drivers access to the extensive Tesla Supercharger network. This move promised a significant boost to Ford EV charging infrastructure. Now, those plans are coming to fruition, with details on how Ford owners can utilize Tesla Superchargers.
Initially, Ford stated that owners of existing EVs, which utilize the Combined Charging Standard (CCS), could access Superchargers using an adapter. Recently, Ford announced the availability of this Tesla-developed adapter. Ford EV owners can order one complimentary adapter per vehicle through the Ford website until June 30th. After this date, the adapter will be available for purchase at $230. Looking forward, Ford plans to manufacture new vehicles equipped with NACS connectors, eliminating the need for an adapter.

The adapter, as demonstrated to MaagX and other media outlets, easily connects a Ford EV to a Supercharger. It slips over the Supercharger connector and plugs into the vehicle’s charging port. Ford assures that EVs can charge at their maximum speeds using the adapter. Safety features include an interlock device to prevent accidental disconnection during charging and a latch to deactivate charging if the adapter separates from the Supercharger. Integrated temperature sensors further enhance safety by mitigating overheating risks.
While access is expanding, it’s important to note that not all Supercharger stations are compatible. Only V3 and newer Superchargers support the adapter, and even then, initial availability will be limited. However, Ford estimates access to approximately 15,000 Supercharger stations across the U.S. and Canada. This represents a substantial increase from the initial estimate of 12,000, reflecting the ongoing expansion of the Supercharger network.
This integration with the Supercharger network effectively doubles the charging stations accessible through Ford’s Blue Oval Charge Network. The Blue Oval Charge Network comprises a collection of third-party public charging stations, offering streamlined access for Ford customers. Similar to other Blue Oval Charge Network stations, Superchargers, along with their pricing, will be searchable within the Ford Pass app and in-vehicle charging locators. Charging is designed to be seamless, with drivers simply plugging in and initiating charging via Ford Pass or the Plug and Charge protocol.
Ford’s decision to embrace NACS and the Supercharger network has triggered a ripple effect throughout the automotive industry. Numerous other major automakers have subsequently announced similar plans. However, Ford remains the first to implement this integration, albeit initially through the use of adapters. This strategic move positions Ford as a leader in expanding EV charging accessibility and enhancing the overall EV ownership experience.
In conclusion, Ford’s collaboration with Tesla provides a significant advantage for current and future Ford EV owners. The readily available adapter offers immediate access to a vast charging network. As Ford transitions to incorporating NACS connectors directly into its new EVs, the charging experience will become even more streamlined. This partnership underscores the evolving landscape of EV charging infrastructure and highlights the commitment to enhancing the convenience and accessibility of electric vehicle ownership.
