Chevrolet, GMC, and Cadillac EVs can now utilize these charging stations, significantly expanding charging options for drivers. This integration provides access to over 17,800 Supercharger stations strategically located across the nation, alleviating range anxiety for long trips. Tesla boasts charging speeds that can add up to 200 miles of range in just 15 minutes.
Currently, using a Supercharger requires a $225 adapter due to incompatibility between the charging cable and GM’s charging port. This adapter can be purchased through a mobile app, which also helps locate available Supercharger stations, check their status, and manage payments. The adapter is compatible with all current GM EVs, including models like the GMC Hummer EV, Cadillac Lyriq, and Chevrolet Blazer EV. Looking ahead, General Motors plans to integrate Supercharger-compatible charging ports directly into their vehicles starting in 2025, eliminating the need for the adapter.
This move by General Motors follows a growing trend of automakers adopting Tesla’s North American Charging Standard (NACS). Ford, Rivian, Honda, and Volvo have also joined the ranks, prioritizing customer convenience and expanding charging infrastructure. Even Electrify America, a major charging network operator, plans to incorporate the NACS plug.
