The pursuit of innovative EV charging solutions has led Mercedes-Benz to explore a groundbreaking technology: solar paint. Inspired by the boundless curiosity of thinkers like Albert Einstein, the company’s R&D department is developing a special paint capable of harnessing solar energy to power electric vehicles.
This innovative paint, when applied to a vehicle’s surface, acts as a photovoltaic system, constantly generating energy from the sun, even when the car is off. This energy can then be used directly for driving or stored in the high-voltage battery, potentially increasing electric range and reducing the need for frequent charging stops.
Remarkably thin, the solar paint is thinner than a human hair, yet packs a powerful energy punch. According to Mercedes-Benz, coating a mid-size SUV with this paint could generate enough energy for up to 7,456 miles of driving per year under ideal sunny conditions.
While optimal sunlight is key, the solar paint can still contribute significantly to EV charging even in less sunny regions. Mercedes-Benz estimates that in sun-drenched Los Angeles, the solar paint could provide 100% of the energy needed for an average daily commute of 32 miles. Even in less sunny Stuttgart, Germany, the paint could still power 62% of that distance.
Adding to its appeal, the solar paint is environmentally friendly. Unlike some solar panels, it doesn’t rely on rare earth elements or silicon. Instead, it utilizes readily available, non-toxic raw materials, making it easier to recycle and more cost-effective to produce than traditional solar modules.
Several other companies, including Aptera, Sono Motors, Lightyear, and Hyundai, are also exploring solar energy for EVs. However, their focus has primarily been on solar panels for smaller, lighter vehicles. Mercedes-Benz believes its solar paint could extend solar charging capabilities to larger vehicles, such as electric SUVs.
