A Scottish couple has made history by completing the first-ever pole-to-pole journey in an electric vehicle (EV). Chris and Julie Ramsey achieved this remarkable feat after a grueling 10-month, 18,000-mile (29,000-km) expedition across 17 countries in North and South America, culminating in their arrival at the South Pole.

A Challenging Electric Vehicle Adventure

The Ramseys undertook this ambitious electric vehicle journey in a modified Nissan Ariya e-4ORCE, equipped with larger tires to navigate the challenging terrains. Their expedition tested the limits of both the EV and the couple, as they faced torrential rain, fierce winds, and extreme temperatures. The primary goals of this mammoth undertaking were to demonstrate the resilience of electric vehicles, promote EV adoption, and showcase their potential for reducing carbon emissions.

Reaching the South Pole in an Electric Car

Upon reaching the South Pole, Chris Ramsey expressed his astonishment, stating, “I can’t believe we’re at the South Pole. I’ve always had full confidence in the amazing capabilities of electric vehicles, and I knew our Nissan Ariya would tackle everything thrown at it. But it’s been far tougher than I anticipated.” Julie added, “This has been an incredible journey, with the people we’ve met, the friends we’ve made and the support we’ve received.”

Charging an EV on a Pole-to-Pole Trip

The couple relied on existing charging infrastructure along their route to power their electric vehicle. In areas where charging stations were unavailable, they utilized a 5kW wind turbine and portable solar panels, showcasing the resourcefulness required for long-distance EV travel in remote locations.

Previous EV Adventures and Future Plans

This is not the Ramseys’ first foray into long-distance EV expeditions. In 2017, they completed the demanding 10,500-mile (17,000 km) Mongol Rally in their Nissan Leaf, becoming the first to do so in an electric vehicle. Their experience in the Mongol Rally highlighted the potential of such adventures to raise awareness and interest in EVs, inspiring them to embark on their Pole-to-Pole challenge. The couple plans to take a well-deserved break over the Christmas holidays before deciding on their next adventure, which will undoubtedly involve another electric car.
