Tesla has initiated a recall of 1.85 million vehicles in the United States due to a potential safety issue with the hood latch. This recall affects a broad range of Tesla models, including the Model 3, Model S, Model X, and Model Y, spanning various production years.
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) issued a notice detailing the problem. Under specific circumstances, after a driver opens the hood, the latch mechanism may fail to register its open status. Consequently, the driver may not receive a warning when shifting into drive with the hood unlatched. This oversight poses a significant safety risk as an unlatched hood could potentially fly open while driving, obstructing the driver’s view and increasing the likelihood of a collision.
The recall encompasses certain 2017-2024 Model 3 vehicles manufactured in China between September 6, 2017, and July 15, 2024, equipped with a specific hood latch. Additionally, all delivered 2013-2024 Model S, 2016-2024 Model X, and 2020-2024 Model Y vehicles are included in the recall.
Tesla’s investigation into this issue began on March 25, following reports of unintended hood openings on Model 3 and Model Y vehicles in China. The automaker observed a higher incidence rate in China compared to Europe and North America, though the reasons for this discrepancy remain unclear.
To address the problem, Tesla has implemented two over-the-air software updates, released on June 18 and July 15, respectively. These updates are provided at no cost to vehicle owners.
This recall follows another recent recall of Tesla’s Cybertruck for issues with its windshield wipers and a potential detachment of a plastic trim piece. Tesla owners are encouraged to check the NHTSA website using their Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) to determine if their vehicle is affected by this or any other recalls.
While Tesla has not received reports of any accidents, injuries, or fatalities related to the hood latch issue, the company identified three warranty claims or field reports potentially linked to the problem as of July 20. This proactive recall underscores Tesla’s commitment to safety and addressing potential issues promptly.
To ensure driver safety and prevent potential accidents, Tesla urges all affected vehicle owners to install the software updates as soon as possible. This straightforward process can be completed remotely, minimizing inconvenience. By prioritizing these updates, Tesla aims to mitigate the risks associated with the hood latch issue and maintain the safety of its vehicles on the road. Regularly checking for recalls and updates is a crucial aspect of vehicle ownership, ensuring optimal safety and performance. Tesla encourages all owners to stay informed and take advantage of the available resources to maintain the safety and reliability of their vehicles. By proactively addressing potential issues, Tesla aims to uphold its commitment to customer safety and provide a positive ownership experience.
