The Tesla Cybertruck is facing its fifth and largest recall to date, affecting nearly 27,000 vehicles manufactured between November 13, 2023, and September 14, 2024. This recall addresses a potential safety concern related to the rearview camera display.

According to a report filed with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), the rearview camera image can experience a delay of up to eight seconds after shifting into reverse. This delay could hinder a driver’s ability to see clearly behind the vehicle, increasing the risk of a collision. While Tesla has not reported any accidents, injuries, or fatalities linked to this issue, the company is taking proactive steps to address the problem.

Tesla plans to release a free, over-the-air software update to rectify the rearview camera delay. In the interim, Tesla advises drivers to exercise extra caution when reversing. They recommend performing visual checks over their shoulders and utilizing the side mirrors to ensure safe maneuvering.

This recall follows four previous recalls since the Cybertruck’s launch in November 2023. The first recall addressed a potential issue with the accelerator pedal cover becoming loose and potentially causing unintended acceleration.

A second recall, impacting several Tesla models, including the Model S, Model X, Model 3, and Model Y, focused on correcting overly small warning light text on the instrument panel. Similar to the current recall, this issue was resolved via an over-the-air software update.

The third recall, affecting Cybertrucks produced until June 2024, pertained to a faulty electric motor that could lead to windshield wiper failure. Concurrently, a fourth recall addressed the risk of black trim detaching from the Cybertruck’s body during operation.

This latest recall underscores the ongoing challenges Tesla faces in perfecting its futuristic electric pickup truck. While over-the-air updates offer a convenient solution, the recurring need for these recalls raises concerns about quality control and potential safety risks. Tesla owners are encouraged to install the software update as soon as it becomes available to ensure the optimal safety and performance of their Cybertrucks.
