Tesla, known for its electric vehicles, batteries, and solar panels, is venturing into a new territory: a unique Supercharger station experience. The company has received approval to build a 1950s-style diner and drive-in movie theater combined with a Supercharger station in West Hollywood, Los Angeles.

This innovative facility will feature 32 Supercharger stalls, allowing Tesla and other EV owners to charge their vehicles while enjoying a retro dining experience. The open-air rooftop will offer views while customers watch clips from classic movies as their cars charge.

The concept originated from Elon Musk in April 2021, when he tweeted about a planned Supercharger station in Santa Monica with a ’50s diner and movie clips. While the location shifted to West Hollywood, the core idea remains. The focus on short movie clips rather than full-length features aligns with the rapid charging capabilities of Superchargers, which can add significant range in just minutes.

Tesla submitted the project application in November 2022 and received approval from the City of Los Angeles in the previous month. While the construction timeline and opening date remain unclear, the project is expected to commence soon.

This unique Supercharger station reflects Tesla’s broader strategy to expand its global charging network. Currently, the U.S. boasts nearly 1,900 Tesla Supercharger stations with over 20,000 ports, according to the U.S. Department of Energy.

The West Hollywood project’s success could inspire Tesla to develop more themed charging stations, offering enhanced experiences beyond simply charging a vehicle. This move could redefine the charging experience, making it more engaging and enjoyable for EV owners.

This innovative approach could also attract new customers to the Tesla brand and further solidify its position as a leader in the EV industry. By combining functionality with entertainment, Tesla aims to create a destination where EV owners can recharge both their vehicles and themselves.

This project underscores Tesla’s commitment to innovation and customer experience, transforming the perception of charging stations from mere utilities to vibrant hubs of activity. It will be interesting to see how this unique concept evolves and influences the future of EV charging infrastructure.
