BMW isn’t new to the electric vehicle (EV) market. The company embraced electrification early and offers a range of EVs, from the SUV-sized iX to the high-performance i7. Now, the 5-series joins the electric lineup with the new BMW i5. The electric 5-series shares many similarities with its gas-powered siblings, which is a positive. The i5 boasts a luxurious interior, impressive performance, and a stylish design that surpasses some of BMW’s more controversially styled models.
The 2024 i5 comes in two models: the practical i5 eDrive40 and the performance-focused i5 M60. A third model is expected in 2025. This review focuses on the i5 M60, potentially BMW’s best EV to date.
Design and Interior
The BMW i5 M60 is a handsome car, showcasing the best of BMW’s recent design language while avoiding some of its less successful elements. Thankfully, BMW opted for a more understated grille design instead of the oversized kidney grilles seen on some other models. While the i5 M60’s grille is faux, it blends seamlessly with the overall aesthetic.

The front features a long, angled hood and a flat nose, complemented by slim, sweeping headlights that mirror the equally slim taillights. While some styling cues, like the faux grille, might seem unnecessary on an EV, 5-series enthusiasts will appreciate the overall look.
The interior is equally impressive. It evokes the i7 but without some of the more extravagant features. Don’t expect a 31-inch rear-seat entertainment screen. However, the i5 M60 shares many of the i7’s premium touches. The front features a large 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster and a 14.9-inch infotainment display. Premium stitched leather seats and a thick steering wheel add to the luxurious feel.

The i5 M60 represents the pinnacle of 5-series design, both inside and out.
Technology, Infotainment, and Driver Assistance
The BMW i5 M60 features a large, dual-screen setup for instrumentation and infotainment, running BMW’s iDrive 8.5 system. BMW has made noticeable improvements to the software, although Apple CarPlay remains a preferred option for many.
iDrive 8.5 is generally user-friendly. Customizable widgets display essential driving information, and CarPlay can be integrated as a widget or displayed full-screen. While a grid of apps offers access to various functions, navigating them can be confusing at times.
BMW i5 M60 Steering WheelThe multifunction steering wheel provides convenient access to key controls.
Like many automakers, BMW has integrated climate controls into the touchscreen, a design choice that can be frustrating. While basic temperature adjustments are accessible via permanent buttons, more complex controls require multiple taps. The system’s occasional sluggish responsiveness adds to the annoyance and can be a safety concern. The return of physical controls would be a welcome improvement.
The i5 M60 includes various driver-assist features, such as blind-spot monitoring and emergency braking. The optional Highway Assistant enables hands-free driving on highways and represents a significant advancement in driver-assistance technology.
Driving Experience
The BMW i5 M60 delivers an excellent driving experience. It’s dynamic, responsive, and quick.
The i5 M60 boasts two electric motors generating a combined 593 horsepower, propelling the car from 0 to 60 mph in a mere 3.7 seconds. While not among the absolute fastest EVs, it’s far from slow and delivers a thrilling acceleration.

The ride is smoother than expected yet retains enough road feel to satisfy drivers who prefer a more connected experience. Responsive handling enhances the driving enjoyment, allowing the car to navigate sharp corners with ease.
Range and Charging
The i5 M60 is powered by an 81.2-kilowatt-hour battery pack, providing a somewhat disappointing range of 240 to 256 miles depending on the configuration. This lower range is a trade-off for the M60’s increased performance; the i5 eDrive40 can achieve up to 295 miles.
BMW i5 M60 Front ViewThe i5 M60’s front fascia features a modern interpretation of BMW’s classic design.
The i5 M60 supports a maximum charging speed of 205kW, which is respectable but not class-leading. Many competitors offer at least 250kW, with some reaching 350kW. At 205kW, the i5 M60 can charge from 10% to 80% in approximately 30 minutes.
Choosing the Right i5
The 2024 BMW i5 M60 is the performance-oriented variant, appealing to drivers who prioritize speed and handling. However, this comes at the cost of reduced range. Those seeking the i5’s luxury and style but prioritizing range and affordability might prefer the i5 eDrive40. It offers a compelling balance of features and practicality.
