The automotive world is undergoing a significant transformation, and Mercedes-Benz is at the forefront. While embracing the electric future with models like the EQS, the German automaker continues to refine its traditional combustion engine lineup, including the iconic S-Class. The 2024 Mercedes-AMG S63 E Performance represents a fascinating bridge between these two worlds. This high-performance sedan combines the opulence of the S-Class with the exhilarating performance of AMG, now enhanced with a plug-in hybrid system. We recently spent time with the S63 E Performance in Southern California to explore this compelling blend of tradition and innovation.

Design and Interior: A Subtle Evolution of Elegance
The AMG S63 E Performance retains the elegant and understated design language of the S-Class. While subtle AMG badging, unique wheel designs, and slightly larger front air intakes hint at the performance within, the overall aesthetic remains sophisticated and restrained. One notable change, however, is the replacement of the traditional hood ornament with the Mercedes star within the grille, a first for the S-Class. An AMG crest medallion now occupies the former hood ornament’s location, a subtle yet significant shift for Mercedes enthusiasts.

The interior largely mirrors the standard S-Class, which already boasts one of the most luxurious cabins in the automotive world. Nappa leather, massaging seats, and a mesmerizing 64-color ambient lighting system create an opulent atmosphere. AMG-specific touches, such as a new steering wheel design and available carbon-fiber trim, add a sporty flair to the luxurious environment.
Technology and Driver Assistance: Seamless Integration
The S63 E Performance carries over the Mercedes-Benz User Experience (MBUX) infotainment system from the standard S-Class. The system features a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster and a 12.8-inch central touchscreen, offering seamless integration and intuitive operation. Wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, along with a highly responsive natural language voice recognition system, further enhance the user experience. The “Zero Layer” concept, which prioritizes a map view with customizable widgets, allows for quick access to key functions. The S63 also inherits the comprehensive suite of driver-assistance features from the S-Class, including adaptive cruise control, lane-keeping assist, automatic emergency braking, and more.

Driving Experience: The Best of Both Worlds
At the heart of the S63 E Performance lies a unique powertrain that combines a 4.0-liter twin-turbocharged V8 engine with a plug-in hybrid system. The V8 is paired with a nine-speed automatic transmission, while a rear-axle mounted electric motor, powered by a 13.1-kWh battery pack, has its own two-speed transmission. This combination delivers a staggering 791 horsepower and 1,055 pound-feet of torque, propelling the S63 from zero to 60 mph in a mere 3.2 seconds.

The hybrid system allows for all-wheel drive in both hybrid and electric modes, enhancing traction and stability. A reinforced body shell, upgraded brakes, rear-axle steering, and an advanced air suspension system contribute to the S63’s remarkable handling and ride comfort. The result is a car that can effortlessly transition from a serene luxury cruiser to a thrilling performance machine.
Range, Charging, and Safety: Practical Considerations
Official range and efficiency figures for the S63 E Performance were not available at the time of our review. During our drive, we observed fuel consumption of 13.8 mpg in hybrid mode. A 3.7-kW AC onboard charger is standard, but Mercedes has yet to release details on charging times or DC fast charging availability. As with the standard S-Class, crash-test ratings from IIHS and NHTSA are not expected due to the limited production volume. Warranty coverage should align with other S-Class models.

Conclusion: A Compelling Blend of Performance and Luxury
The 2024 Mercedes-AMG S63 E Performance offers a unique proposition for those seeking a high-performance luxury sedan that embraces electrification without sacrificing the visceral thrill of a V8 engine. It successfully blends the comfort and opulence of the S-Class with the exhilarating performance that defines AMG. While the full transition to electric vehicles continues, the S63 E Performance demonstrates that the internal combustion engine still has a compelling role to play.
