The electric SUV market has been limited, especially for those seeking a full-size option beyond the expensive Rivian R1S. Kia, known for its value-driven vehicles, aims to change this with the highly anticipated EV9. Starting at $54,900, the Kia EV9 promises a modern design, a spacious seven-passenger capacity (in select configurations), and the proven platform of the popular EV6. But does it live up to the hype? We tested the GT-Line model to find out.

Design and Interior

The EV9 blends the beloved Telluride’s blocky silhouette with the EV6’s modern aesthetics. The result is a sculpted, angular design that feels both substantial and sporty. Kia’s new “Digital Tiger Nose” front fascia, an evolution of the classic Tiger Grille, features angular headlights. Higher-end models boast a distinctive pixel design within the headlights, adding a touch of futuristic flair.

The rear of the EV9 mirrors this modern aesthetic with angular taillights reminiscent of contemporary Volvos. A subtle roof spoiler enhances the sporty profile.

Inside, the GT-Line exudes premium quality. Available in six- or seven-seat configurations, our test model featured the luxurious six-seat layout with motorized captain’s chairs in the second row. These chairs offer exceptional comfort, potentially surpassing even the front seats. Thoughtful touches abound, including USB-C ports throughout the cabin, a generous second-row storage bin, and dedicated climate zones for enhanced passenger comfort.

Passenger space is impressive in all three rows, though the third row, like in most three-row SUVs, is best suited for children, especially when the second-row seats are fully extended. Cargo space is also generous, offering 20.2 cubic feet with the third row up and 43.5 cubic feet with it folded down. The front trunk (frunk) provides additional storage, though its capacity is slightly reduced in all-wheel-drive models like our GT-Line tester.

Technology and Driver Assistance

Kia has embraced modern technology in the EV9, with a largely positive infotainment experience. Wireless Apple CarPlay integration is a welcome addition, simplifying smartphone connectivity. A dedicated climate control display paired with physical controls offers convenient temperature adjustments for both driver and passengers. While this dedicated display is slightly obscured for the driver and somewhat difficult for the passenger to reach, it’s a preferable alternative to burying climate controls within complex menus.

Standard driver-assistance features include blind-spot monitoring and emergency braking. The GT-Line adds advanced cruise control with lane centering, notably allowing for hands-free operation on the highway, a step towards more sophisticated autonomous driving technology. However, some desirable features, such as the camera-based blind-spot monitor and Surround View Monitor, are reserved for higher trims like the Land AWD and GT-Line. It’s advisable to consult Kia’s website to ensure the desired features are available on the chosen model. Double-check that the features you want are available.

Driving Performance

Despite its size, the EV9 delivers the instant acceleration characteristic of electric vehicles. While heavier than the EV6, it remains remarkably quick for its class. Available in single-motor (rear-wheel drive) and dual-motor (all-wheel drive) configurations, the EV9 offers a range of power outputs. The base Light RWD model provides 215 horsepower, while dual-motor versions can deliver up to 379 horsepower. A future GT model promises an impressive 576 horsepower.

The EV9’s ride is smooth and comfortable, prioritizing a luxurious experience over outright sportiness. This aligns well with its family-oriented SUV nature. Kia’s i-Pedal system enables one-pedal driving, bringing the vehicle to a complete stop when the accelerator is released. However, it requires activation each time the car is started. Three levels of regenerative braking are also available, with the chosen setting retained between drives.

Range and Charging

The EV9’s range varies depending on the model, from a modest 230 miles for the Light RWD to a more respectable 304 miles for the Light Long Range RWD. The Wind and Land AWD models offer 280 miles, while our GT-Line tester, with its increased power output, delivers 270 miles.

Fast charging is a highlight, with support for 350kW charging, enabling a 10% to 80% charge in just over 20 minutes at compatible stations. However, the availability of such high-powered chargers is still limited.

Conclusion

The Kia EV9 offers a compelling blend of space, technology, and performance in the emerging electric SUV segment. While range varies across trims, the availability of fast charging mitigates this concern. The base Light model provides an affordable entry point, while the Wind AWD model likely represents the sweet spot for most buyers with its enhanced performance, range, and features. The GT-Line caters to those seeking the most advanced technology and driver assistance. The EV9 is a strong contender in the electric SUV market and a welcome addition for families seeking a spacious and tech-forward electric vehicle.
