The Sonic the Hedgehog film franchise has established a tradition of teasing future characters. Following Tails’ introduction at the end of the first film and Shadow’s reveal in the second, Sonic the Hedgehog 3 continues the trend. WARNING: MAJOR SPOILERS FOR SONIC THE HEDGEHOG 3 FOLLOW BELOW.

The first post-credit scene of Sonic the Hedgehog 3 places Sonic far from his familiar Green Hills. Seemingly lost after a race with Tails and Knuckles, Sonic finds himself under attack in a forest, facing not one, but a legion of Metal Sonics. Just as the odds seem overwhelming, a familiar pink hedgehog arrives to assist: Amy Rose, wielding her signature Piko Piko Hammer.

Long-time fans of the Sonic the Hedgehog games have eagerly awaited Amy Rose’s cinematic debut. A mainstay of the series for over 30 years, Amy has been a playable character in numerous titles, including the recent Sonic Superstars. While Sonic the Hedgehog 3 only offers a brief glimpse of Amy, her appearance sets the stage for her integration into the Sonic Cinematic Universe. Early portrayals depicted Amy as infatuated with a somewhat oblivious Sonic, but Sega has evolved her character in recent years.

Metal Sonic, another recurring character from the games, also makes a significant appearance. A robotic doppelganger of Sonic, Metal Sonic has consistently served as an antagonist throughout the franchise. Created by Dr. Ivo Robotnik in the games, it remains to be seen whether the films will follow the same origin story. Unlike Knuckles and Shadow, who eventually became allies of Sonic, Metal Sonic has remained a persistent foe. This raises the possibility of Metal Sonic taking center stage as the primary antagonist in a potential fourth film, perhaps even alongside a returning Dr. Robotnik, played by Jim Carrey. While Paramount hasn’t officially confirmed Sonic the Hedgehog 4, reports suggest a spring 2027 release.
