The highly anticipated Analogue 3D, a meticulously engineered FPGA-based Nintendo 64 console, has been officially delayed to Q1 2025. Originally slated for a 2024 release, Analogue announced the postponement, alongside revealing the first images of the console and opening preorders for October 21st, 2024, at 8 a.m. PT. Priced at $250, the console will be available in black and white.
Analogue, known for its high-quality retro gaming hardware like the Analogue Pocket (Game Boy) and Analogue Duo (TurboGrafx), utilizes FPGA chips in its consoles. These chips allow for direct hardware emulation, delivering a superior gaming experience compared to software-based emulators. This approach aims to provide lag-free, accurate gameplay, addressing a significant challenge in N64 emulation.
The company emphasized the four years of development invested in the Analogue 3D to achieve accurate and lag-free emulation, a feat considered particularly difficult with the N64. Known for its complex architecture, N64 emulation often suffers from inaccuracies and performance issues. Analogue, however, claims “100% compatibility” with the 3D, promising users a flawless retro gaming experience true to the original hardware. This compatibility extends to original N64 cartridges, ensuring a plug-and-play experience for users.
Addressing another common issue with N64 emulation, the console’s reliance on CRT displays for optimal visuals, the Analogue 3D offers 4K resolution output alongside “Original Display Modes.” These modes aim to recreate the look and feel of CRT displays on modern TVs, providing an authentic visual experience for nostalgic gamers.
Furthermore, Analogue announced a shift towards product-specific operating systems. The Analogue 3D will utilize 3DOS, a new OS built specifically for the console. While similar in functionality to Analogue OS, 3DOS will provide firmware updates and software installation options directly through the console or controller. The Analogue Pocket will also receive its dedicated operating system, PocketOS. Though the 3D is delayed, the anticipation for this meticulously crafted console remains high. Preorders open on October 21st, with the console and a separately sold 8BitDo Bluetooth N64 controller ($40) expected to ship in Q1 2025.
The Analogue 3D’s delayed launch, while disappointing, underscores the company’s commitment to delivering a high-quality product. The console’s features, including FPGA-based emulation, 100% cartridge compatibility, and CRT display modes, promise a premium N64 gaming experience for retro enthusiasts.
