The recent surge in modding activity for Baldur’s Gate 3 on PS5 and Xbox Series X/S has unfortunately led to performance issues and crashes. Larian Studios, the game’s developer, has addressed these problems with a straightforward solution: a mod limit.

This week, Larian acknowledged player reports of instability and performance drops related to using a large number of mods on consoles. Unlike PCs, consoles handle file management differently, and exceeding a certain threshold can lead to significant problems. Larian’s solution, implemented in Hotfix #29, introduces a cap of 100 mods for Baldur’s Gate 3 on both PS5 and Xbox Series X/S.

Larian explained the reasoning behind this change in their hotfix announcement: “Now that there are more than 100 mods available to download on console, we need to have a serious chat. Who plays with more than 100 mods in a single save you might ask? Well, as it turns out, there’s a handful of you,” Larian stated. They further clarified, “Unlike PC, consoles can only juggle so many files at once. The more mods you have installed, the quicker this file limit is reached.” While recommending players install only the mods they actively use, the 100-mod limit ensures improved stability across the board.

In addition to the mod limit, Hotfix #29 also addresses a specific multiplayer crash on Xbox. This fix resolves an issue where players were experiencing crashes while in multiplayer lobbies.

While the popularity of modding for Baldur’s Gate 3 is undeniable – players have downloaded millions of mods – the console versions require a more balanced approach. This 100-mod cap ensures a more stable and enjoyable experience for console players. Larian remains committed to addressing any further issues that may arise. Though no future updates are currently confirmed, the studio is likely to continue monitoring player feedback and implement fixes as needed.
