Capcom surprised fans at The Game Awards with the announcements of Onimusha Way of the Sword and a new Okami sequel, signaling a potential trend for the company. These revivals are just the beginning, according to a press release on Capcom’s official website. While the publisher will continue to support its flagship franchises, it plans to delve into its back catalog and resurrect dormant IPs.
The press release states, “In addition to regularly releasing major new titles each year, Capcom is focusing on re-activating dormant IPs that haven’t had a new title launch recently. The company is working to further enhance corporate value by leveraging its rich library of content, which includes reviving past IPs like the two titles announced above, in order to continuously produce highly efficient, high-quality titles.”
Potential Candidates for Revival
While it’s too early to predict which IPs Capcom will revive next, there are several strong contenders. One prominent example is Dino Crisis, which hasn’t seen a new entry in over two decades. The survival horror franchise demonstrated significant fan interest in the Capcom Super Elections earlier this year, receiving a staggering 80,769 votes for a sequel or new game.
Mega Man Legends is another series ripe for a comeback. With two successful mainline games and a well-received spin-off, the franchise has a dedicated fanbase. While Mega Man Legends 3 was once in development for the Nintendo 3DS, it was unfortunately canceled in 2011. Many fans would even welcome a collection of the existing games, similar to other Mega Man spin-off compilations released in recent years.
Looking Ahead
Capcom boasts a rich portfolio of beloved gaming franchises, offering numerous possibilities for revival. While Resident Evil, Monster Hunter, and Street Fighter remain their flagship titles, countless other games deserve a second chance. For now, fans must patiently await further announcements.
