The Epic Games Store’s holiday giveaway continues to underwhelm, with the fifth free offering being DLC for the free-to-play game Dark and Darker. This follows a string of less-than-stellar freebies, disappointing users accustomed to more substantial titles in previous years.
As a yearly tradition, the Epic Games Store offers daily free games throughout the holiday season, typically starting around mid-December and lasting into the new year. This year’s giveaway began on December 19th and runs until January 2nd, giving users just 24 hours to claim each title. While the increased frequency of free games is welcome, the quality of the offerings has been a letdown.
Previous holiday giveaways have featured highly anticipated and popular games, making them a highlight for PC gamers. This year, however, the selection has been notably weaker. The most recent example is the December 23rd offering: Dark and Darker – Legendary Status. This isn’t a standalone game but rather downloadable content requiring the base game, Dark and Darker, which is already free-to-play in early access.
The Legendary Status DLC typically costs $30 and upgrades a free “Squire” account to “Legendary” status, unlocking various features outlined on the Steam store page.
Given the underwhelming offerings so far, PC gamers are hoping for more compelling titles on Christmas Eve and Christmas Day. These two days represent the peak of the holiday season, and many are anticipating a significant improvement in the quality of free games. December 31st and January 1st are also key dates in the promotion. However, the lackluster selection leading up to Christmas makes it unlikely that the remaining days will offer anything substantially better.
With a string of underwhelming freebies under its belt, the Epic Games Store’s holiday promotion is falling short of expectations. The inclusion of DLC for a free-to-play game further fuels the disappointment. PC gamers are left hoping for a last-minute turnaround as the giveaway continues.
