Did Madden Ratings Influence a Real-Life NFL Trade Decision?

Did Madden Ratings Influence a Real-Life NFL Trade Decision? Did Madden Ratings Influence a Real-Life NFL Trade Decision?

The popular NFL simulation game, Madden, known for its detailed player ratings, has reportedly played a surprising role in influencing a real-world NFL owner’s decision-making. EA Sports strives for realism in its Madden games, assigning player ratings that spark considerable discussion with each new release. However, these virtual ratings may have carried more weight than intended in the case of New York Jets owner, Woody Johnson.

According to a recent report by The New York Times, Johnson allegedly used Madden ratings as a key factor in a trade decision during the 2024 offseason. The Jets were reportedly close to acquiring wide receiver Jerry Jeudy from the Denver Broncos in February. However, the deal fell apart at the last minute, with Johnson reportedly instructing then-GM Joe Douglas to cancel the trade. Sources suggest Johnson believed Jeudy’s Madden rating didn’t justify the assets the Jets would have surrendered in the trade. Ironically, Jeudy has since flourished with the Cleveland Browns, who ultimately secured him in a trade, having a career-best year.

This revelation is startling for several reasons. NFL owners invest significant resources in coaching staff and general managers, relying on their expertise to make informed decisions. Johnson’s apparent reliance on Madden ratings over the judgment of his paid professionals is unusual, to say the least.

The report further indicates that Johnson’s reliance on Madden ratings stems from the influence of his teenage sons, Brick and Jack. Douglas reportedly felt that he answered more to Johnson’s sons than to Johnson himself. Despite this unusual dynamic, it was Douglas who ultimately lost his job as Jets GM in late November, following the team’s disappointing performance.

While the Jets’ decision not to acquire Jeudy is now a topic of discussion, it’s unlikely his presence would have drastically altered their season. The Jets currently hold a disappointing 4-11 record, placing them among the league’s worst teams. This unfortunate outcome secures them a high draft pick in the upcoming NFL Draft. It remains to be seen whether Johnson will consult EA Sports College Football 25 for scouting purposes.

Despite the Jets’ current struggles, there’s good news for Fortnite fans this winter.
