The classic platformer, Donkey Kong Country Returns HD, is making its way to the Nintendo Switch next month, and a new overview trailer provides a glimpse into what players can expect. Newcomers to the series can get a feel for the gameplay, a look at some of the antagonists, and a taste of the story. The Tiki Tak Tribe has hypnotized the island’s animals and pilfered Donkey Kong’s precious banana hoard. DK and Diddy Kong must journey through 80 levels, jumping and swinging their way to victory to restore order.
Re-Return of a Classic
This isn’t Donkey Kong Country Returns‘ first rodeo. Initially released on the Wii in 2010, the game later saw a 3DS release in 2013. The Switch version marks its third appearance. The latest trailer highlights the “Modern” mode, carried over from the 3DS version. This mode offers a more accessible experience compared to the “Classic” mode, providing extra hearts and access to helpful items at Cranky’s Shop. Items such as the Crash Guard, which allows players to survive two Mine Cart or Rocket Barrel crashes, and the Green Balloon, granting an extra life after a fall, are available to purchase. Note that players cannot switch between Classic and Modern modes mid-game.

Control Options and Co-op Play
The original Wii version utilized motion controls, requiring players to shake the Wii Remote for specific actions. The Switch version offers the option of standard button controls, similar to those found in Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze. However, for purists seeking the original experience, shaking the Joy-Cons will replicate the motion control functionality. The Switch version also supports two-player co-op using a single Joy-Con pair. Bonus levels exclusive to the 3DS version will also be included in this release.
A Long-Awaited Return
The wait for a new Donkey Kong game on the Switch has been lengthy, leaving fans to revisit ports like Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze and remasters such as Mario vs. Donkey Kong. While the future of the franchise on Nintendo’s next console remains uncertain, Donkey Kong Country Returns HD promises to be the definitive edition of a beloved title.
Release Date and Pre-Orders
Donkey Kong Country Returns HD launches on January 16th. Pre-orders are currently available on the eShop and at various retailers like GameStop, which is offering a special purchase bonus.
