Fortnite, the immensely popular online game, has issued refunds to over 600,000 players following a settlement with the Federal Trade Commission (FTC). This payout stems from concerns over the game’s in-app purchase system, which previously made it too easy for players, including minors, to unintentionally spend real money on in-game cosmetics.
The FTC’s primary issue centered around the ease of making purchases within Fortnite. The lawsuit alleged that the lack of robust confirmation steps and inconsistent button layouts tricked players into buying items they hadn’t intended to. For example, players could accidentally purchase an item while previewing it or even when resuming the game from sleep mode. Timed item offers also contributed to a sense of urgency, potentially influencing impulsive purchases.
A wide array of character costumes are available in Fortnite, and many were easily purchased by accident.
While some might question how such accidental purchases occur, the previous system’s design flaws made them surprisingly common. Inconsistencies between menu buttons and the absence of consistent confirmation dialogues contributed to unintended purchases.
FTC Settlement Details and Payouts
This isn’t the first time Epic Games, Fortnite’s developer, has faced scrutiny from the FTC. A prior lawsuit addressed concerns about minors playing Fortnite without parental permission and spending money in the game. This issue remained a point of contention in the recent case, as the ease of purchasing cosmetics on linked credit cards persisted.
The current settlement sees Epic Games distributing over $72 million in refunds to affected players in the United States. The average payout is estimated to be around $114.

Claiming a Fortnite Refund
Many players have reported receiving their settlement payments. However, the distribution process is ongoing, and not everyone will receive their funds simultaneously.
For those who haven’t received a payment and believe they’re eligible, the official deadline for submitting a claim has passed (October 8, 2024). However, the FTC states they are still reviewing claims submitted after the deadline. Those who believe they are entitled to a refund can still submit a claim through the FTC website, though the outcome remains uncertain.
Epic Games’ Response and Changes to Fortnite’s In-App Purchase System
Following the lawsuit, Epic Games has implemented changes to Fortnite’s in-game shop to address the FTC’s concerns. These changes include modifying the display of item countdowns for increased transparency regarding expiration dates and revising language that could be construed as in-game advertisements targeted at minors. While players can still purchase a wide range of cosmetic items, the updated system aims to minimize accidental purchases.
