A Steam game released in November 2024 is now permanently free for all players. Unlike limited-time giveaways, ABI-DOS is available at no cost indefinitely. This isn’t a shift to a free-to-play model with microtransactions; the game remains unchanged, just free of charge.
Steam Deck users might encounter compatibility issues. The game’s Steam page lists its Steam Deck compatibility as “Unknown.” While this doesn’t confirm incompatibility, it suggests potential performance problems or even a complete inability to run on the handheld device. Further testing is needed to determine the game’s actual Steam Deck performance.
Developed by ABI-DOS Software, this marks their debut release. The game launched on November 15, 2024, receiving “Very Positive” reviews on Steam, boasting a 96% approval rating from over 100 user reviews.
The developer’s decision to offer ABI-DOS for free stems from a desire to reach a broader audience. Despite achieving modest profitability, the primary motivation wasn’t financial gain. The developer, who has a separate job outside game development, prioritized creating challenging puzzle games.
“This decision comes after modest sales during the first month and a half after release,” explains the developer. “While the game was still profitable, financial gain was never my primary motivation (I have an independent job outside of game development). My true passion lies in creating Zach-like games with open-ended puzzles and intricate technical solutions. Now, my goal is to reach a wider audience. If significant revenue isn’t feasible, I’d much rather let more people experience and enjoy the game for free.”

Why ABI-DOS is Worth Checking Out
While now labeled “free-to-play” on Steam, ABI-DOS doesn’t incorporate any microtransactions. It remains the complete, original game. The official description invites players to: “Build the most advanced operating system ever created! Can you master the fictional simulation language of this mind-bending machine? Design circuits, automate UBITS (colored mobile data blocks), and optimize your system. The Admin is always watching, and he’s not what he seems.”
This unique premise, combined with its positive reception, makes ABI-DOS an intriguing title, especially now that it’s free. The developer’s commitment to prioritizing player experience over profit further adds to its appeal.
