Red Dead Redemption 2, despite its age, still boasts one of the most impressive open worlds in gaming. Its immersive and lifelike environment sets it apart from titles like Elden Ring, Horizon Forbidden West, and Starfield. This stems from the sheer depth of NPC interactions, creating a dynamic world, even if meticulously scripted.
Rockstar Games achieved this through countless detailed scripts, giving the illusion of organic reactions. Replicating this in GTA 6 presents a greater challenge due to the urban setting and significantly larger NPC population. However, the potential for open-world sandbox chaos in GTA surpasses that of Red Dead Redemption. It appears Rockstar has not only adapted their RDR2 approach but amplified it for GTA 6.

Former Rockstar Games designer Ben Hinchliffe, who worked on GTA 6 before leaving in 2022, hinted at this evolution in an interview with IGN. He reassured fans that GTA 6 wouldn’t dilute the RDR2 open-world experience but would instead expand upon it.
Hinchliffe stated, “From a theoretical standpoint, and what you might be able to do if you had the budget and the team size, I don’t see any reason why you couldn’t have that [Red Dead Redemption 2] level of NPC interaction in a much larger scale game.”
Bound by an NDA, Hinchliffe couldn’t divulge specifics. However, his statement strongly suggests Rockstar Games possesses both the necessary budget and team size to implement this enhanced NPC interaction on a grander scale in GTA 6.
If this proves true, it will undoubtedly raise the bar for open-world gaming, a feat unlikely to be matched until Rockstar’s next release. Their unique combination of resources remains unparalleled in the industry.
