The critically acclaimed action RPG, Horizon Zero Dawn, is leaping from consoles to the big screen. Announced during Sony’s CES 2025 press conference, PlayStation Studios and Columbia Pictures have revealed they are in the early stages of developing a feature film adaptation of Guerrilla Games’ hit title. The movie will adapt the original 2017 game, focusing on Aloy’s origin story within a post-apocalyptic world teeming with robotic creatures. No release date or creative team has been confirmed yet.

Horizon Zero Dawn introduces players to Aloy, a skilled hunter navigating a post-apocalyptic landscape. Driven to uncover her mysterious origins, she strives to earn her place among the Nora, a fierce matriarchal tribe residing in the mountainous ruins of Yellowstone National Park. Aloy’s journey pits her against formidable machines and introduces her to diverse tribes as she unravels the secrets of her past and the world around her.

Horizon Zero Dawn garnered widespread critical acclaim for its compelling narrative, expansive open world, stunning visuals, engaging combat, and memorable performances, particularly Ashly Burch as Aloy. The game has won numerous awards and is one of PlayStation 4’s best-selling titles, with over 24.3 million copies sold as of April 2023. The franchise’s success continued with an expansion and the sequel, Horizon Forbidden West, released on PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5 in 2022. More recently, Horizon Zero Dawn Remastered launched on PC and PlayStation 5, along with LEGO Horizon Adventures for Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 5, and PC.

While details about the Horizon Zero Dawn film remain scarce, it joins a growing roster of PlayStation titles making their way to Hollywood. Sony also revealed concept art for an Until Dawn movie at CES 2025, alongside announcements for a live-action Helldivers film and a Ghost of Tsushima anime series in development with Takanobu Mizuno and Gen Urobuchi. These projects are the latest additions to PlayStation Productions’ growing slate of adaptations, following Twisted Metal, The Last of Us, Gran Turismo, and Uncharted.

Columbia Pictures’ involvement in the Horizon Zero Dawn adaptation is unsurprising, given its affiliation with Sony. The studio is also developing several other highly anticipated video game adaptations, including The Legend of Zelda, Uncharted 2, and Street Fighter.
