Nintendo surprised fans on Wednesday with a unique gadget announcement—the Nintendo Sound Clock: Alarmo. This isn’t the next-gen console reveal many were hoping for, but it’s a distinctive device designed to track sleep and ensure you actually get out of bed. Priced at $100, the Alarmo is set for an early 2025 release. Nintendo Switch Online members in the U.S. and Canada can preorder now. While it’s expected to be available at major retailers, its limited availability is a possibility, similar to other niche Nintendo products.
A Distinctly Nintendo Device
The Alarmo’s design embodies Nintendo’s signature playful style. Its round, bright red body and large white button evoke iconic characters like Mario. Beyond its aesthetic, the device features a motion sensor to detect when you’re in bed and when you’re up and moving. This allows the alarm to persist until you physically get out of bed, although a classic snooze button mode is also available. For those needing extra motivation, a progressively louder alarm setting is also included.
Detailed Sleep Tracking with “Records”
The Alarmo’s sensitive sensors can detect even subtle movements during sleep, generating detailed reports called “Records.” These provide insights into your sleep patterns and movements throughout the night.
From Sensor Technology to Sleep Innovation
In an Ask the Developer interview, Alarmo producer Yosuke Tamori revealed that the project originated from existing Nintendo sensor technology seeking a practical application.
“As this sensor maintains privacy since it doesn’t use a camera, we had an idea for how it could be highly suitable for use in the bedroom,” Tamori explained.
While refining the technology to accurately detect small movements took time, the team’s eventual success in identifying a person’s presence in bed led to the alarm clock concept. A subsequent interview post showcases early prototypes, including a boxy, Echo-like design and a large, blue watch face. The team also considered features like hand gesture controls, although these were ultimately discarded.
Customization with Nintendo Flair
Naturally, customization options abound. The Alarmo features 35 different “scenes” and music from popular Nintendo titles, including Super Mario Odyssey, The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, Splatoon 3, Pikmin 4, and, surprisingly, Ring Fit Adventure.
A Unique Addition to the Nintendo Family
The Nintendo Sound Clock: Alarmo is a quirky addition to the company’s product lineup. While not the major announcement many anticipated, it showcases Nintendo’s innovative spirit and willingness to explore unconventional product categories. With its unique blend of sleep tracking and distinctly Nintendo charm, the Alarmo offers a novel approach to waking up.
