The Game Awards 2024 kicked off with awards for established franchises like Tekken and Batman Arkham, but fans were also treated to a first glimpse of gameplay from the highly anticipated Slay the Spire 2. While the initial announcement featured a cinematic trailer, this new footage showcased the core gameplay loop that fans know and love. The trailer highlighted the strategic depth of the deck-building roguelike, emphasizing the need to adapt to ever-changing circumstances, acquire new cards, and strategize against challenging enemies.
The gameplay footage provided a look at returning characters, the Ironclad and the Silent, alongside the newly revealed Necrobinder. While gameplay took center stage, the trailer also hinted at the challenging nature of the Spire, showcasing new enemies, events, and environments that players will encounter on their ascent. A tease of a fourth, brand-new character also generated excitement among fans.
Both new and returning cards were shown, promising a wealth of strategic options for players to experiment with as they navigate the perilous Spire. This sequel builds upon the foundation of the original 2019 release, utilizing a new engine and rewritten code for a fresh, optimized experience.
Mega Crit Games, the developers behind Slay the Spire, did not announce a specific early access release date during The Game Awards stream. However, they indicated that players can hopefully expect to embark on this new adventure sometime in 2025.
The official game description paints a picture of a world waiting for the Spire’s reopening: “Civilization has waited 1,000 years for the Spire to reopen its doors… Return to the Spire and face friends and foes in this sequel to the quintessential roguelike deckbuilder. How high will you ascend… and what truths lie at the top? New slayers join the fray with their own sets of cards, mechanics, and personalities. Try out more archetypes and master them at your own pace. The Spire forever awaits those who dare challenge it…”
