The Marvel Rivals battle pass system, even before its official launch, garnered positive attention due to its unique feature: allowing players to earn items from past battle passes. This appealing aspect remains unchanged, assuring players they won’t miss out on previous rewards if they take a break. However, the specifics of how these battle passes function, as acknowledged by the developers, are “a bit complicated,” particularly regarding Chrono Tokens.
Chrono Tokens are the in-game currency used to purchase battle pass items. They can be acquired in two ways: by purchasing them with the premium currency, Lattice, or by earning them through gameplay progression such as completing missions and achievements.
The complexity arises from the expiration of earned Chrono Tokens. Tokens earned through gameplay expire at the end of each season and cannot be carried over. However, Chrono Tokens purchased with Lattice operate differently. A portion of these purchased tokens can be carried over to the next season.
The developers clarified the carryover mechanism: “The specific amount retained will be the lesser of the remaining Chrono Tokens and the total Chrono Tokens you bought with Lattice in the current season.”
Marvel Rivals players can still redeem their battle pass rewards.
An example provided by NetEase illustrates this: if a player purchases 1,000 Chrono Tokens using Lattice and earns an additional 500 through gameplay, ending the season with 1,500 tokens, only the initial 1,000 purchased tokens will carry over. These purchased tokens will continue to carry over to subsequent seasons until used.
NetEase acknowledged the system’s complexity, stating, “It’s a bit complicated, but we wanted to give you all as much info as possible to address your concerns.”
For expiring earned Chrono Tokens, there’s a safeguard mechanism. At the end of a season, any unspent earned Chrono Tokens will be automatically redeemed for items in the current battle pass. While players won’t have control over the specific items received, this prevents complete loss of earned tokens.
Other games like Helldivers 2 and Fortnite utilize similar currency systems for battle pass progression, often without carryover options. While Marvel Rivals‘ carryover system introduces some complexity, it’s a relatively unique approach. The initial introductory season in Marvel Rivals was designed to be shorter, with the first full season commencing in January. Player feedback on the battle pass system will be crucial in assessing its effectiveness and potential adjustments once a full season has concluded.
