The Marvel universe expands its gaming landscape with the upcoming Marvel 1943: Rise of Hydra. A recent interview with Entertainment Weekly sheds light on the intriguing role of Wakanda in this World War II-era game, developed by Skydance and Marvel Games. Award-winning writer and Skydance New Media director Amy Hennig, known for her work on the Uncharted series, offers insight into the hidden nation’s involvement in the game’s narrative.
This World War II iteration of Wakanda presents a unique setting, contrasting sharply with the game’s other primary location, Occupied Paris. Hennig emphasizes this distinction, describing Wakanda as “hidden away from the outside world and protected by this impenetrable jungle.” This secluded portrayal aligns with Wakanda’s established lore.

Instead of T’Challa, players will encounter Azzuri, T’Challa’s grandfather and the reigning Black Panther, voiced by Khary Payton (The Walking Dead). Azzuri finds himself unexpectedly allied with Captain America (voiced by Drew Moerlein of Horizon Forbidden West fame) against a shared enemy: the Nazis. This alliance stands in stark contrast to the tension between the characters in Captain America: Civil War.
The game’s narrative seamlessly transitions between the snowy landscapes of Occupied Paris and the vibrant jungles of Wakanda. This shift in environment reflects the contrasting worlds of Captain America and Azzuri, highlighting the global impact of the conflict.

Wakanda’s isolationist stance during this period is a key element of the story. While traditionally non-interventionist, emerging circumstances force Wakanda to engage in the global conflict to protect its own interests. Hennig poses a thought-provoking question regarding Wakanda’s ability to remain hidden in a rapidly changing world on the cusp of technological advancements like satellite surveillance.
Adding further depth to Wakanda’s presence is Nanali, a new character voiced by Megalyn Echikunwoke. Nanali, a Wakandan spy operating in Occupied Paris, is one of four playable characters in Marvel 1943: Rise of Hydra. Her expertise in infiltration tactics promises a unique gameplay experience.
The game explores the delicate balance between Wakanda’s desire for isolation and the unavoidable pull of global events. This narrative promises a fresh perspective on the nation’s history and its place within the wider Marvel universe. Marvel 1943: Rise of Hydra is set to release next year.
