Superheroes dominate popular culture, from streaming shows to blockbuster films. Video games are no exception, with titles like Marvel’s Spider-Man and Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy achieving critical and commercial success. This success has paved the way for other heroes to star in their own games, including the highly anticipated Wonder Woman title.

Announced at The Game Awards in 2021, the Wonder Woman game’s teaser trailer offered a glimpse of the iconic hero and her Lasso of Truth, but revealed little else. Three years later, details remain scarce, leaving fans wondering about the game’s development progress.

Initial rumors suggested the game entered production concurrently with the trailer’s release, primarily serving as a recruitment tool for Monolith, the studio behind the acclaimed Middle-earth: Shadow of Mordor series. Bloomberg journalist Jason Schreier reported on his podcast, Triple Click, that a source close to the project indicated a tentative 2026 release date, though this was considered “unrealistic.”

While publishers have released unfinished games in the past, often with significant cuts in content, Warner Bros. would be wise to avoid this approach with Wonder Woman. The success of Hogwarts Legacy, which benefited from delays to ensure polish, demonstrates the value of a well-executed release. Conversely, the poorly received Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League, plagued by a lengthy development cycle and unwanted live-service elements, serves as a cautionary tale. This commercial failure undoubtedly impacted Warner Bros., and with Rocksteady reportedly working on a new Batman title, it’s unlikely to see release for several years.

The mixed reception of Gotham Knights further underscores the importance of a successful Wonder Woman game. While Batman enjoys consistent popularity and opportunities for new game adaptations, Wonder Woman’s future in gaming hinges on the success of this initial venture.

A well-received Wonder Woman game could also encourage Warner Bros. to explore games featuring other DC heroes. A new Superman game has been a long-standing fan request, while The Flash, with his super-speed, presents exciting gameplay possibilities, especially given the capabilities of current-gen consoles.

For now, it appears fans will have to wait for further updates on Wonder Woman. Hopefully, new information will surface next year, assuming the purported 2026 release date remains a possibility.
