The farming simulator genre is crowded, with giants like Stardew Valley and Harvest Moon leading the charge. Even with so many options, players continue to embrace these games. Rune Factory and others have expanded the genre’s possibilities, and now Square Enix joins the fray with Harvestella, a JRPG with a heavy emphasis on life simulation. Its unique art style and pacing make it a promising addition to the genre.
In Harvestella, players create an avatar and enter a fantastical world governed by giant crystals called Seaslights. These crystals maintain the natural balance of the seasons, but their harmony is disrupted by Quietus, the Season of Death. Quietus grows longer each year, threatening the world’s equilibrium, and players must embark on a quest to stop it.

While the combat is enjoyable, it isn’t particularly challenging. Casual RPG fans will appreciate the accessibility, but those seeking demanding combat might find it lacking.
Where Harvestella truly shines is in its story and simulation elements. Players can explore villages, engage in farming, fishing, cooking, and crafting. While the tutorials are extensive, the depth of these systems is rewarding. Combined with the side quests and Square Enix’s signature whimsical art style, Harvestella feels remarkably complete and visually stunning. It’s one of the most visually appealing life simulators available.
Harvestella represents an exciting new direction for RPG fans, showcasing Square Enix’s unique take on the farming sim genre. The game offers a wealth of activities, from its engaging visuals to its numerous side quests. However, it’s important to manage expectations. Harvestella is primarily a JRPG with simulation elements, not a pure simulator. Its pacing reflects this JRPG focus. Players solely interested in farming and interacting with villagers might find it overwhelming. But for those seeking a JRPG experience enriched with life simulation features, Harvestella delivers.
