Astral, a marketing automation startup, aims to bring the often-criticized, generic marketing content commonly found on platforms like LinkedIn to the discussion-based community of Reddit.
Founder Savannah Feder recently showcased Astral’s capabilities in a video posted on X (formerly Twitter). The video demonstrates how AI agents within Astral can navigate Reddit, automatically generating comments that promote products or services. Similar to other AI agents developed by companies like Anthropic and Google, Astral captures screenshots of web pages, analyzes them using AI, and then sends commands to the mouse and keyboard, effectively mimicking human interaction.
Feder highlighted the bot’s ability to navigate Reddit “just like a human would,” demonstrating its process of logging in, navigating to specific subreddits like r/productmanagement, searching for relevant posts about “user research,” and then crafting comments that promote a product “without sounding too sales-y.”
While the ideal scenario for such AI agents is to assist users with computer navigation, the reality is often less noble. The deployment of AI for creating marketing automation spambots is a growing concern, fueling the disdain many hold for this technology. It exemplifies the potential for AI to be misused by those seeking to exploit online platforms for personal gain.

The proliferation of AI-generated content raises concerns about the future of online discourse. Platforms like LinkedIn and X are already saturated with generic, AI-written posts, and Astral’s introduction threatens to bring this wave of bland content to Reddit.
What’s particularly concerning is the apparent belief among developers like Feder that AI and humans are interchangeable, even suggesting that AI will surpass human capabilities. In response to inquiries about using the Reddit API, Feder explained that Astral utilizes a browser-based agent because Reddit and other social media platforms restrict API usage for automated tasks—precisely to prevent spam. She even boasted about the bot’s ability to bypass CAPTCHAs.
Reddit co-founder Alexis Ohanian responded to Feder’s post with a GIF of Patrick from SpongeBob crying, a clear indication of the concern surrounding this development.
The emergence of tools like Astral presents a challenge for platforms like Reddit. It remains to be seen how effectively they can implement anti-bot measures to combat this potential influx of spam and maintain the authenticity of their communities.
