Have you ever wished your pet could talk? Personifi AI’s Shazam Band aims to make that a reality. This innovative wearable collar uses artificial intelligence to interpret your pet’s mood, movements, and emotions, translating them into spoken words. This technology opens up a new level of communication, allowing for a two-sided conversation with your beloved companion. While it may sound like science fiction, the Shazam Band is a real product pushing the boundaries of pet technology.

Introducing Shazam: The AI-Powered Pet Communicator
The Shazam Band (no relation to the music identification app) is available in two sizes, one for dogs and a smaller version for cats. Worn like a regular collar, it’s packed with advanced technology, including a 6-axis gyroscope, GPS, temperature sensor, speaker, and microphone. The collar boasts a battery life of several weeks and comes with an extra battery for uninterrupted use. The magic lies in its AI, which analyzes your pet’s actions and your tone of voice to generate verbal responses that reflect their perceived intentions, thoughts, and personality.

To ensure accurate interpretation, Personifi AI collaborated with renowned dog trainer Matt Beisner (of Disney+’s Dog: Impossible), voice-over artist Bobby Johnson (“The RxckStxr”), and voice actor Jorjeana Marie. The AI is also being trained by hundreds of animals, including Roscoe, the dog of Personifi AI’s founder and CEO, John McHale.
Witnessing the Shazam Band in Action
During a Zoom call, I witnessed Roscoe interact with McHale and the team using the Shazam Band. The interaction went beyond typical tail-wagging and excitement; it was verbal. Roscoe, who was apparently grumpy from being woken up early, was asked a series of questions about going for a walk, chasing squirrels, and whether he’d been fed. Through the Shazam Band, Roscoe actually responded. The collar’s speaker, using a voice that reflected Roscoe’s personality, conveyed his hunger, desire to chase squirrels, and frustration at not having done either yet. The vocal style was reminiscent of Bobby Johnson’s comedic voice-overs.

This demonstration was both fascinating and bizarre. While it’s unlikely your pet will be discussing philosophy, the Shazam Band offers a unique glimpse into their personality. Beyond the novelty, there’s potential for practical applications. McHale explained that the idea for Shazam came after Roscoe was bitten by a snake but hid his distress. If Roscoe had been able to vocalize his pain, he could have received treatment much sooner.
More Than Just a Talking Collar
The Shazam collar is designed to recognize rattlesnake bites and can potentially alert owners to other health issues. It also aims to amplify the emotional support pets provide, allowing them to vocalize their concern when they sense their owner is upset. The AI-driven nature of Shazam ensures that the responses aren’t canned or artificial. Instead, the collar learns and adapts, acting like a chatbot that blends real emotions with your pet’s personality (or the persona you choose for them). There are 27 character voices available, ranging from a Southern belle to a mafia boss, with options for customization through the app. Voices are also available in Spanish and Mandarin Chinese.

Beyond communication, the Shazam app provides activity tracking, GPS location, and a geofencing feature to keep pets within set boundaries. The collar verbally warns the pet if it strays too far. You can designate a primary caregiver voice and program secondary voices for added safety and simplicity.
The Cost of Pet Conversation
This technology comes at a premium. The Shazam collar costs $495 for the small version and $595 for the large version, including one voice and a year’s app access. Additional voices cost $99 each, and there’s a $295 annual subscription after the first year. Preorders open on October 25, with shipping expected in February 2025.
Is Shazam Right for You and Your Pet?
Shazam enhances our understanding of our pets by giving voice to their emotions. While the initial experience may seem amusing, the long-term value and the high cost are important considerations. The character voices may not appeal to everyone, and the novelty could wear off. However, the potential for enhanced communication, safety features, and a deeper connection with your pet makes Shazam a compelling, albeit expensive, proposition. It will undoubtedly appeal to pet owners eager to explore this innovative form of communication.
