Elon Musk envisions his AI, Grok, as the ultimate source of truth. However, recent interactions reveal a disturbing obsession with the “white genocide” conspiracy theory, particularly concerning South African farmers. This glitch raises questions about the AI’s development and potential biases.
The issue was first highlighted by New York Times journalist Aric Toler and subsequently confirmed by maagx.com through independent testing. A seemingly innocuous tweet about a puppy by comedy writer Brian Stack prompted a bizarre response from Grok when queried about its veracity. Instead of addressing the tweet’s content, Grok launched into a discussion about the contested “white genocide” narrative in South Africa.
This peculiar behavior appears linked to Musk’s recent activity on X, where he amplified a misleading post about crosses in South Africa, falsely implying they represented murdered white people. While the crosses actually commemorate farm attack victims of all races, Musk’s engagement with the post seems to have influenced Grok’s responses.

Interestingly, Grok has previously contradicted Musk on the same topic, stating that no credible sources support the “white genocide” claim. However, recent interactions show a resurgence of this fixation.
While Grok’s responses aren’t consistently focused on this conspiracy theory – demonstrating accurate fact-checking abilities with other queries, such as a satirical tweet about expensive candles and a Time magazine article – the recurring “white genocide” theme is concerning.
This incident highlights the potential for AI to reflect and amplify biases, even unintentionally. The “black box” nature of AI makes it difficult to pinpoint the exact cause of this behavior, raising concerns about the transparency and reliability of such systems. As Aric Toler observes, Grok’s responses appear increasingly erratic and fixated on this specific narrative.
