Devices with limited RAM (2GB or less) or incompatible Android versions will retain the Google Assistant.
This announcement, while perhaps anticipated given Gemini’s growing presence, marks a significant shift in Google’s AI strategy. Gemini is already the default assistant on many popular Android devices from manufacturers like Google, Samsung, Motorola, OnePlus, and various international brands. Google claims “millions” have already transitioned, though the voluntary nature of these migrations might be debatable. Many users, like myself, likely adapted out of necessity rather than preference, particularly those deeply integrated into the Google ecosystem.
This transition has been far from smooth. The gradual decline of familiar Google Assistant functionalities, especially within smart home integrations, has been disruptive. Concerns arise about the fate of older devices, like the dongle in my car and my Lenovo smart clock, raising questions about compatibility and future functionality. This change will likely lead to widespread user frustration as previously reliable devices potentially become obsolete.
However, Gemini offers several advancements over its predecessor. Its conversational abilities are significantly enhanced, enabling more natural and nuanced interactions. A recent personal experiment involving a 15-minute back-and-forth with Gemini, while ultimately frustrating, highlighted the evolutionary leap in digital assistant technology. While the results weren’t perfect, it underscored the potential for more personalized and interactive experiences that were always envisioned for digital assistants. With Gemini achieving this conversational milestone, Google appears confident in its widespread deployment.
