Google has introduced a new memory feature for its Gemini chatbot, allowing it to retain and utilize user-specific details in subsequent conversations. This enhancement aims to deliver more relevant and tailored responses, catering precisely to individual needs.

Google describes this feature as providing Gemini with a user-created manual. This promises more consistent and predictable interactions, eliminating the need to repeat information. It also aims to seamlessly integrate the AI into existing workflows and offer users greater control over their personal data. The feature focuses on learning user interests and preferences, encompassing work, hobbies, and general aspirations.

Users can input their information either via Gemini’s “Saved Info” page or through direct conversation. While the latter offers convenience, it also raises concerns about inadvertently sharing sensitive information. The “Saved Info” page serves as a central hub for managing and controlling the data Gemini stores. Google emphasizes user autonomy, stating that Gemini will adapt its interactions based on user-defined preferences, giving users full control over saved and utilized information.

Initially, this memory feature is available in English for Gemini Advanced users with a Google One AI Premium Plan, priced at $20 per month.

This new capability closely mirrors OpenAI’s Memories feature for ChatGPT, which also remembers user details across conversations. Like Gemini, ChatGPT allows users to review, edit, and delete their saved information. While initially a premium feature, ChatGPT’s memory function is now accessible across all subscription levels, including free access.

This development marks a significant step towards more personalized AI interactions. By remembering user preferences, Gemini aims to provide more helpful and relevant assistance, streamlining workflows and enhancing user experience. This move also positions Gemini as a more direct competitor to ChatGPT, offering similar personalized features.
