A recent study reveals that GPT-4 consistently outperforms humans in one-on-one debates, with its persuasive power amplified when equipped with personal information like age, profession, and political leanings.
Researchers from EPFL (Switzerland), Princeton University, and Fondazione Bruno Kessler (Italy) conducted a study involving 900 participants. Each participant engaged in debates with either a human opponent or OpenAI’s GPT-4. In some instances, both the human and AI participants had access to demographic data about their counterpart, including gender, age, education, occupation, ethnicity, and political affiliation.
AI Persuasion Boosted by Personalization
Published in Nature Human Behaviour, the study demonstrated that GPT-4 was 64.4% more persuasive than human debaters when provided with personal information. Without this data, the AI’s performance was comparable to human debaters. The researchers noted that the rise of social media and online platforms has increased the potential for personalized persuasion, also known as “microtargeting,” where messages are tailored to specific individuals or groups to maximize their impact.
Implications of AI-Driven Persuasion
When GPT-4 personalized its arguments, its persuasiveness significantly increased, boosting the likelihood of changing someone’s mind by 81.2% compared to human-human debates. Notably, human debaters did not experience a similar increase in persuasiveness when given access to personal information.
