Accidentally submerged or spilled liquid on your USB cable? Don’t assume it’s ruined. Knowing how to properly dry a wet USB cable can often restore it to full, safe functionality. This guide outlines the essential steps.
Step 1: Unplug Immediately
First, disconnect the wet USB cable from all devices (computer, charger, phone). This prevents short circuits and protects your electronics from potential water damage.
Step 2: Dry the Cable’s Exterior
Use a soft, absorbent cloth or paper towel. Gently wipe down the entire length of the cable, removing all visible moisture from its surface. Pay attention to the areas near the connectors.
Step 3: Clear Moisture from Connectors
Carefully shake each USB connector to dislodge larger water droplets. Then, insert the tip of a dry, lint-free cloth or a twisted paper towel into the connector’s opening to absorb residual moisture. Be gentle.
Step 4: Use Cool Air (Optional)
If moisture seems trapped deep inside a connector, use a hairdryer on its coolest setting and lowest fan speed. Hold it at least 8 inches (20cm) away and blow cool air into the connector for a minute. Avoid hot air.
Step 5: Air Dry Thoroughly
Place the USB cable in a dry, well-ventilated spot. Allow it to air dry completely for a minimum of 4-6 hours, though 24 hours is ideal, before testing. This ensures all hidden moisture evaporates. Your cable should then be fine.
By following these steps, you can often save your water-damaged USB cable and ensure it’s safe for future use. For more useful tech tips and guides, consider subscribing to PCWorld’s Try This newsletter here!
