Amazon has announced the discontinuation of its Appstore for Android devices, effective August 20, 2025. This change also marks the end of the Amazon Coins digital currency program, used for purchasing apps and games within the store. Amazon confirmed these changes in a recent support document for developers.

The company stated, “Starting August 20, 2025, you will no longer have access to the Amazon Appstore on your Android device. We will also be discontinuing the Amazon Coins program on August 20, 2025.” Amazon has assured users that any unredeemed Coins will be refunded before the August deadline.

This closure only impacts users on non-Amazon Android devices. The Appstore will continue to function on Amazon’s Fire TV and Fire Tablet products. After August 20, 2025, Android users will no longer be able to download or use apps obtained through the Amazon Appstore.

An Amazon spokesperson explained the decision, stating, “We’ve decided to discontinue the Amazon Appstore on Android to focus our efforts on the Appstore experience on our own devices, as that’s where the overwhelming majority of our customers currently engage with it.”

While the Google Play Store remains the dominant app marketplace for Android, the platform’s open nature allows for third-party app stores like Amazon’s. However, low usage likely contributed to Amazon’s decision to shut down its Appstore on non-Amazon Android devices.

This isn’t the first time Amazon has retired its app store from non-Amazon platforms. In 2024, Amazon discontinued its Appstore on Windows devices, which had launched in 2021.
