Android 16 is poised to bring exciting new customization options, extending the personalized clock experience beyond the lock screen and into the notification panel. This development was recently uncovered by Mishaal Rahman of Android Authority within the code of the latest Android 16 Beta. While not yet officially released, Rahman successfully activated the feature, providing a glimpse into its potential.
A key change in Android 16 is the separation of Quick Settings and Notifications. Swiping down from the right reveals Quick Settings, while a left swipe displays Notifications. Navigation between these panels can be accomplished through various methods, including tapping icons at each corner of the screen.
This separation offers more real estate within the Notifications panel, allowing for the integration of lock screen clock customizations. This means the clock style you’ve chosen for your lock screen, along with any thematic changes, can now be reflected in the notification shade.
While the implementation is promising, Rahman notes that the current appearance might differ from the final release. For instance, not all clock styles translate perfectly; while most display correctly, the weather clock, for example, doesn’t render completely.
This enhancement aligns with Android 16’s focus on expanding personalization. This granular control over device aesthetics has long been a major draw for Android users, particularly when compared to other platforms like iOS. Such customization options are likely to attract new users seeking greater control over their device’s appearance.
However, its arrival in the next update isn’t guaranteed. The feature is tied to the separated dual panels, which are still under development. Therefore, it might be included in a subsequent Android 16 quarterly update instead.
