Apple’s Foldable iPhone: A Stunning 2027 Debut?

Apple's Foldable iPhone: A Stunning 2027 Debut? Apple's Foldable iPhone: A Stunning 2027 Debut?

Apple’s noticeable absence from the foldable phone market has sparked curiosity and speculation. While competitors like Samsung and various Chinese brands have established a strong presence in this segment, Apple has remained on the sidelines. However, industry analyst Ming-Chi Kuo suggests that the wait for a foldable iPhone might be worth it, with a potential release slated for 2027.

According to Kuo’s industry note, Apple’s debut foldable smartphone promises to be a premium device. It’s projected to begin mass production in late 2026.

A Premium Design and Creaseless Display?

Kuo indicates Apple will utilize a premium titanium alloy for its foldable iPhone, resulting in a remarkably thin profile. Unfolded, the device is estimated to measure between 4.5-4.8mm, while the folded thickness is anticipated to be around 9-9.5mm. This would place it in direct competition with slim foldables like the Oppo Find N5, Honor Magic V3, and the upcoming Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 7.

The foldable iPhone is rumored to feature a 7.8-inch inner display and a 5.5-inch external cover screen. Perhaps most impressively, Kuo suggests the device may boast a creaseless foldable screen, a feat yet to be achieved by any other smartphone manufacturer, despite significant advancements in minimizing creases. The device is also expected to utilize the same high-density battery as the rumored iPhone 17 Air.

Potential Trade-offs for Slim Design

While the design and display sound promising, Kuo suggests the camera system might be a point of compromise. Due to space constraints, the foldable iPhone is rumored to have only two rear cameras. This contrasts with competitors like Oppo, Vivo, and Honor, which have successfully integrated triple-lens camera systems into their foldable devices.

Similarly, Apple is also rumored to forgo Face ID in favor of a Touch ID fingerprint sensor integrated into the power button, a common approach for many current flagship smartphones.

A Look Ahead

It’s crucial to remember that these are early predictions, and the specifications haven’t been finalized by Apple. Kuo anticipates the development process to begin in Q3 2025, with mass production starting in Q4 2026. The foldable iPhone is projected to launch in late 2027 with a potential price tag between $2,000 and $2,500. Despite the high price point, Kuo expects strong demand for the device.
