Chrome for Android is introducing an additional security measure to protect users from malicious apps. Currently, Google Play Protect scans apps downloaded through the Google Play Store. This new feature will extend protection to sideloaded apps installed via APK files.
According to MSPowerUser, Chrome for Android will soon incorporate APK malware scanning. Upon downloading an APK, Chrome will automatically scan the file to verify its safety before installation.
This feature is currently under development and being tested in Chrome Canary for Android, although it’s not yet functional.
Chrome for Android APK Scan.Google’s Play Protect service already plays a crucial role in Android security. It proactively scans installed apps for potential threats, including malware and privacy violations. If a harmful app is detected, Play Protect alerts the user and can disable or even remove the app. It also monitors app permissions, notifying users of any potentially risky access requests. Furthermore, Play Protect can automatically reset permissions for unused apps, limiting their potential impact on user data. This background operation provides a constant layer of security for Android devices.
The new APK scanning feature in Chrome will further enhance protection for users who sideload apps.
