Apple Wallet has expanded its digital driver’s license and state ID feature to two new locations: New Mexico and Puerto Rico. This brings the total number of participating U.S. states and territories to ten, with two more expected to join soon. This expansion was recently highlighted by a MacRumors reader who noted the newly available support in Puerto Rico.
Apple initially unveiled digital IDs for Apple Wallet back in 2021. However, adoption across U.S. states and territories has been gradual. Prior to New Mexico and Puerto Rico, the service was available in Arizona, California, Colorado, Georgia, Hawaii, Iowa, Maryland, and Ohio.
Montana and West Virginia are anticipated to be the next states to offer digital IDs in Apple Wallet.
These digital IDs offer a convenient way to present identification at select Transportation Security Administration (TSA) checkpoints and participating businesses. They can also be used for age and identity verification in certain apps.
Apple Wallet, preinstalled on iPhones and Apple Watches, provides a secure platform for storing various digital items. These include payment cards, transit passes, boarding passes, tickets, loyalty cards, gift cards, keys, and now, increasingly, digital IDs.
The app streamlines daily tasks, allowing users to make contactless payments via Apple Pay, use public transport, check in for flights, access event tickets, and manage loyalty programs, all within a single app. Security measures like Face ID, Touch ID, and encryption protect sensitive user data.
