The March 2025 feature update brings exciting new capabilities to Google Pixel phones, headlined by the rollout of Pixel Camera 9.0. This update offers an improved astrophotography mode and, for newer Pixel devices, introduces a powerful remote camera feature.
According to 9to5Google, the Pixel Camera 9.0 rollout is underway, though it may take some time to reach all users. The update significantly enhances the popular astrophotography mode, which allows users to capture stunning images of the night sky, including celestial views typically requiring specialized equipment. A key improvement is the addition of an animation mode during capture, enabled by default but togglable in Settings > Advanced.
The update also clarifies the Palm timer mode, which activates a timer with a simple hand wave in front of the camera, functioning with both front and rear cameras.
However, the most substantial upgrade is reserved for Pixel 9 series users, who gain access to the innovative Connected Cameras feature. This functionality allows users to link their Pixel to other compatible devices, such as another Pixel or a GoPro, enabling remote image capture and livestreaming. For example, connecting a GoPro 10 or later allows seamless switching between the Pixel’s camera and the GoPro during recording.
This feature proves invaluable for streamers and content creators seeking to maximize their device usage in multi-camera setups, although currently limited to connecting with one additional device at a time.
To activate Connected Cameras, navigate to Settings > Connected devices > Connected preferences > Connected cameras. Here, you can enable or disable the feature and utilize the Camera Picker to connect and switch between devices. Currently supported devices include Pixel 6 and later, and GoPro 10 and later, all requiring the latest software updates.
Connected Cameras offers further enhancements, allowing users to apply filters and effects to footage from the connected device and enabling direct streaming to popular platforms like Facebook, YouTube, Instagram, Snapchat, and TikTok.
