Google has released a firmware update for the Fitbit Sense and Versa 3 smartwatches to address potential battery overheating issues. While designed to improve battery stability, the update may negatively affect battery life and overall capacity for some users. This follows a similar update for the Pixel 4a earlier this year that also resulted in reduced battery performance.
The update, announced by Google on January 21st, aims to mitigate the risk of overheating in certain Fitbit Sense and Versa 3 batteries. However, the trade-off is a potentially shorter lifespan between charges. Google’s official support page confirms this, stating, “The update will improve the stability of the device’s battery performance and reduce the risk of the battery overheating. As a result, the battery will last for shorter periods between charges and you may need to charge your device more frequently.”
Unfortunately, the update is mandatory. Declining the firmware installation will trigger a device reset and forced update, potentially resulting in data loss. The rollout will continue over the next month, giving users a limited window to install the update once it becomes available for their device.

While Google asserts that the update will only affect devices at risk of overheating, a similar claim was made for the Pixel 4a update, which subsequently led to widespread battery life complaints. Many users reported diminished battery performance even if their devices hadn’t experienced overheating prior to the update. This raises concerns about the potential widespread impact on Fitbit Sense and Versa 3 users.
To address potential issues, Google is offering a $50 appeasement to affected users. To determine eligibility, users can complete a request form. The deadline to file a claim is January 21, 2026. After this date, the $50 appeasement offer will no longer be available.
